Oregon's Hartmann Finishes Second in Mt. SAC Relays 10K
April 17, 2003
WALNUT, Calif. - In opening day action in the Mt. SAC Relays, University of Oregon redshirt junior Jason Hartmann was the lone Duck to compete and took runner-up honors with a near personal best in the 10,000 meters.
Oregon's fifth-ranked 10K runner all-time missed his personal best by only six seconds with Thursday's runner-up placing (28:52.03). The two-time track All-American was the top collegiate finisher and was edged only by Mexican entrant Jonnathan Morales (28:48.31), and placed just ahead of fellow collegians Ed Torres of Colorado (third, 28:55.41), Will McComb of Minnesota (fourth, 29:00.41) and Rod Koborsi of Georgetown (fifth, 29:00.41).
The Rockford, Mich., native Hartmann led part of the fourth and fifth miles Thursday after the race's first-half leader, Ed Torres, slowed down to 70-second laps early in the second half of the race. Eventual winner Jonnathan Morales of Mexico and Torres eventually reassumed the lead from Hartmann for much of the race's remainder.
Hartmann's time Thursday easily met the NCAA automatic standard of 29:00.00, and was just off his personal best of 28:46.76 from the 2003 USA Championships last June at Stanford.
Looking ahead to June's collegiate finale in Sacramento, Hartmann will likely make his third NCAA appearance in the 25-lap event after finishing third in 2001 and fourth in 2002. He could be joined by Duck redshirt junior Ryan Andrus who made his debut in the event in March's Stanford Invitational and ran an NCAA provisional time of 29:12.02. The NCAA championships committee will likely invite at least 20 athletes to the collegiate finale and potentially up to 28. In this week's rankings, Andrus ranked 13th, with four more new athletes running faster Thursday at Mt. SAC.

Looking ahead to Friday's action, the Duck men and women will enter select athletes in the Mt. SAC Relays and the nearby Pomona Pitzer Invitational in Claremont, Calif.
