Huskies Continue to Rewrite Record Books on California Road Trip

April 18, 2003

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Husky track and field athletes added three more top-10 all-time UW marks and two more NCAA Regional qualifiers Friday at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Claremont, Calif. Washington's track and field teams will wrap up its three days of competition in southern California on Sunday with the final day of competition at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., a meet which began Thursday.

Sophomore Sidney Brown led the record assault Friday, becoming just the sixth UW woman ever to triple jump 40 feet with a mark of 40 feet, 1 inch in a second-place finish. Brown's mark puts the Brush Prairie, Wash., native in elite company, and gives the Huskies two 40-foot triple jumpers -- including senior Brittiny Roberts -- for the first time in school history. The mark also qualifies Brown for the NCAA Regional Championships in May, an event for which she is also qualified in the high jump.

In even more exclusive company is sophomore Camille Connelly, who with a time of 10 minutes, 59.50 seconds moved to second on the UW's career list, and became just the second woman ever to break the 11-minute mark in the event. The steeplechase has been a banner event for Washington this weekend, with senior Kate Spigel establishing the school record of 10:37.66 in the event on Thursday at Mt. SAC. Connelly's mark adds her to the school-record list of 30 Huskies already qualified for NCAA competition, and is the first NCAA-qualifying mark of her UW career.

Saturday was a good day for sophomores, as second-year hurdler Cambrielle Jensen also inked her name in the Washington record books, equaling the 10th-fastest 400-meter hurdles mark all-time with a 60.52-second finish. Jensen's time -- tops among collegiate competitors in the event and second-fastest overall -- ties her with former Husky Shavon Hawkins for the 10th spot all-time at Washington, and lowered by half a second her NCAA Regional qualifying mark.

With five new top-10 UW marks and four new NCAA qualifying marks already, the Huskies will wrap up this weekend's competition on Saturday with a return to Mt. SAC for the final day of competition at the prestigious meet.
