Scott's Home Run Lifts No. 10 Cal Past No. 15 Stanford, 2-1
April 18, 2003
Senior catcher Courtney Scott's one-out two-run home run in the fifth inning helped lead the No. 10 California softball team past No. 15 Stanford, 2-1, Friday evening at Boyd & Jill Family Stadium. With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 36-12 (5-5 Pac-10) and the Cardinal falls to 32-16 (4-6 Pac-10).
The win marked head coach Diane Ninemire's 689th career victory, setting a new all-time Cal coaching record. Ninemire now has the most victories by any Golden Bear head coach, surpassing former baseball skipper Bob Milano's 688. In her 16th season at the helm for the Bears, Ninemire posts a current 689-348 overall record.
Stanford broke up the shutout in the sixth inning off two hits and one error. Leadoff batter Catalina Morris drove a base hit to right field and was awarded second base off obstruction. The Cardinal placed runners on the corners after a walk and a fielder's choice. Jessica Allister's singled down the right field line, scoring Morris from third to put Stanford on the board, 2-1.
Twice the Bears left the bases loaded to end the inning, leaving a total of seven runners on base to Stanford's six, as the Cardinal tallied five hits to Cal's three.
Right-hander Kelly Anderson collected the win from the circle, improving her overall record to 15-6 (4-3 Pac-10). Anderson plated five strikeouts and three walks in the win. Stanford's Dana Sorensen (15-6, 4-3) struck out nine in the loss and walked five.
Sophomore Kaleo Eldredge led the offensive attack for the Bears with a 2-for-3 performance notching a walk and a run. Eldredge also made a top-drawer catch in the bottom of the first, tracking down the ball hit to deep right center for the first out of the inning. Scott's dinger was her fourth of the season, 10th career.
The three-game series continues tomorrow with a double header at Cal's Levine-Fricke Field, first pitch is at 1 p.m. Tonight's game will be broadcasted Sunday evening at 8 p.m. as the Game of the Week on the Stanford area's local access channel 27.
