Softball Drops Heartbreaker To No. 20 Oregon, 2-1

April 18, 2003

EUGENE, Ore. - No. 20 University of Oregon scored a pair of unearned runs in the third inning to record a 2-1 victory against Oregon State in Friday's Civil War softball action at Howe Field in Eugene.

OSU falls to 25-22 on the year and 1-10 in the Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon improves to 24-13 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

The Beavers took advantage of a trio of hits in the third inning to garner the early lead. Freshman Lisa Allen led-off the frame with a double to right field and eventually advanced to third after Cara Maxey battled for a one-out bloop single to left. Clare Burnum loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch from UO starter Amy Harris, bringing leading hitter Brynnen Guthrie to the plate. Guthrie sent a bloop shot into shallow left that scored Allen to give OSU a 1-0 advantage. Oregon State wound up stranded three runners on base as Harris settled in and got out of the frame.

OSU pitcher Monica Hoffman kept the Oregon hitters guessing, allowing just one ball out of the infield until a two-out single by Amber Hutchinson in the third. The Ducks managed three hits in the frame however, and took advantage of a pair of Beaver errors to score two unearned runs and take a 2-1 lead. Beth Boskovich's RBI single to left field put the Ducks in front.

The Beavers had runners reach base in every inning besides the first but were only able to capitalize on the one run in the third.

Shelly Prochaska and Adrienne Alo each drew walks in the sixth inning but Duck reliever Andrea Vidlund forced Steph Adams to ground out, ending the Beaver threat.

Pinch hitter Erin Bequette led-off the seventh inning with a single to left field but the Beavers couldn't take advantage.

Allen finished the day with a 2-for-3 effort from the plate while Guthrie went 2-for-4 to lead the Beavers. Oregon State held a 7-4 advantage on hits in the contest.

Hoffman fell to 17-13 on the season despite matching her season-best with eight strikeouts and not allowing an earned run.

Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen was ejected from the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after arguing a call with home plate umpire Steve Arnold.

The Beavers and Ducks will conclude the season series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
