UA Track & Field Blazes Through Day One of Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. - The University of Arizona track and field teams opened up the 44th annual Mt. SAC Relays with two champions and a new school record. Thursday's action at the meet consisted of a distance carnival and several field events. The Wildcats proved to be in top form as they took on the nation's best and came through with several outstanding performances.

The first champion of the day for the Wildcats was crowned when Rich Legarra won the men's university/open discus. His throw of 174 feet, 4 inches (53.14m) was six inches better than his closest competition.

The Wildcat men continued their success in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Josh Ludwig improved his NCAA regional qualifying time with a fifth place finish, crossing the line at 9:00.24, an improvement of over seven seconds. Teammate Mark Anderson wasn't far behind in seventh place, clocking a time of 9:04.85 to earn a bid to the NCAA Regional and Pac-10 Championships. The UA men claimed their second title of the evening in the men's 10,000 meters. Kyle Goklish claimed the win in a time of 29:31.36, earning a NCAA provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. Robert Cheseret added to the day's success by setting a new freshman record in the 5,000 meters. His time of 13:45.88 was an improvement of over 30 seconds on his previous best, which will help his standings in the NCAA regional and Pac-10 qualifying lists.

Beth Hoge led the way for the women during Thursday's distance carnival. She finished 24th in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:21.86, a 25-second improvement on her previous best, which will move her up the standings for the NCAA Regional and Pac-10 meets. Also, Adrienne Goeller finished 12th in the 10,000 meters in a time of 36:23.07.

The Wildcats continue action in Walnut, Calif. Friday evening with the focus on the field events and several track events.
