UW Signs Hans Gasser to Basketball Letter of Intent

April 18, 2003

SEATTLE - Hans Gasser, who led Issaquah (Wash.) High School to a second-place finish in the 2003 Class 3A state tournament, signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Washington, men's basketball coach Lorenzo Romar announced Friday.

The 6-foot-10, 230-pound Gasser averaged 21.1 points and 10 rebounds during his senior season, leading Issaquah to its finest season ever. The Indians capped a 21-7 record in 2003 with their first ever appearance in the state championship game. Issaquah lost 65-56 to Rainier Beach on March 8 in the title contest despite Gasser's 28-point, 11-rebound performance that included 10-for-13 shooting from the field.

A first-team all-state selection in 2003, Gasser completed his career by scoring in double figures during each of his final 56 games. Issaquah won its first ever KingCo 3A championship behind Gasser who received the conference's Player of the Year award the last two seasons.

'Number one, Hans is a great student. He is an extremely hard worker who kind of came out of nowhere to develop into a player that we think is really going to help our program,' Romar remarked.

'He's an outstanding player and a skilled shooting big guy who is willing to do whatever it takes to become better and to play within a team concept. We were encouraged to see how he elevated his game during the state tournament.'

Gasser was voted to all-tournament team after leading all players with 99 points and 40 rebounds in four games. He averaged 24.8 points and 10.0 rebounds.

Gasser is the second member of Washington's 2003 basketball recruiting class, joining junior college transfer Tre Simmons who committed on Nov. 19. Simmons is a 6-5 swingman who prepped at Seattle's Garfield High School before playing one year at Odessa (Texas) Junior College. He played the 2002-03 season at Green River (Wash.) Community College.

The Huskies may sign another player before the spring signing period concludes May 15.
