Blue Crushes Gold in Final Spring Scrimmage, 45-0.

April 19, 2003

BERKELEY - Richard Schwartz threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns and Reggie Robertson completed 7-of-8 attempts for 71 yards and one score to lead the Blue team to a 45-0 victory over the Gold in Cal's final scrimmage of the spring Saturday in Memorial Stadium.

The Blue squad scored the first three times it had the ball. One the fourth play of the afternoon, tailback Adimchinobe Echemandu tossed a 38-yard strike to wide receiver Vince Strang. Robertson then led the Bears on a five-play, 60-yard drive that resulted in a 12-yard TD pass to tight end Jordon Hunter. Tyler Fredrickson followed with a 37-yard field goal.

Schwartz, who was 11-for-18 passing, had touchdown throws to Geoff McArthur (13 yards) and Randy Bundy (53 yards). In addition, freshman tailback Marcus O'Keith scored on a two-yard run and cornerback Mike McGrath returned a fumble 53 yards into the end zone.

Freshmen Steve Levy and Cary Dove handled the majority of quarterbacking duties for the Gold. Levy was 7-for-10 for 56 yards, while Dove was 4-for-11 for 36 yards.

'The players did a nice job being physical and pushing through the spring,' said head coach Jeff Tedford, who added that the quarterback competition would be open again in the fall.

O'Keith finished the day as the game's leading rushing, going for 82 yards on 12 carries. Echemandu, who is returning from a knee injury suffered last spring, had 51 yards on nine attempts.

'Marcus O'Keith had a good camp,' Tedford said. 'It was great to see Echema take a step in the right direction.'

McArthur paced all receivers with six catches for 79 yards, while three players hauled in three passes each - Bundy (79 yards), Strang (52 yards) and Junior Brignac (30 yards).

Linebacker Joe Maningo and defensive end Monte Parson both recorded quarterback sacks, while Tim Mixon had the game's only interception.

'Tim Mixon had a solid spring,' Tedford added. 'Going into camp, he's a starter at corner for us.'

Tedford also cited the offensive line as one of the key developments of the spring, particularly singling out freshman Andrew Cameron and sophomore Ryan O'Callaghan as young players who made good strides forward.
