Cougars Score Early In Beating Arizona 12-8

April 19, 2003

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State built a 12-3 lead after six innings in a 12-8 win against Arizona in Pacific-10 Conference action Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Aaron MacKenzie (3-3) pitched six innings, allowing six earned runs and eight hits in notching the win for the Cougars (12-26, 4-8 Pac-10). Nick Kenyon tossed three shutout innings to record his third save of the season. Kevin Guyette allowed six runs on 10 hits in the losing effort for the Wildcats (28-14, 7-5).

At the plate, every player except third baseman Dustin Realini collected a hit for WSU. The Cougars 18 hits matched its previous season-high, which came during an 11-9 win at San Jose State Feb. 22. Jonathan Fender led the way, going 5-for-5, while Grant Richardson and Justin Hart had three hits each.

After Arizona scored in the top of the first, WSU answered in its half of the inning, Steve Mortimer's single to left field plated Jeremy Farrar.

The Wildcats scored again in the top of the second, but the Cougars matched Arizona in the bottom of the frame on Jay Miller's RBI double to left field, which scored Fender.

The Cougars then broke things open with four runs in the third, three in the fourth and three in the sixth, taking a 12-3 lead.

In the third, after Richardson singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Mortimer walked. Derek Bruce followed with a single to centerfield, plating Richardson, while Mortimer scored on the play on a throwing error by the centerfielder. Two batters later, Realini's groundout to second base scored Bruce from third. After Fender doubled down the left field line, Hart scored him with a single to left field.

Farrar led-off the fourth with a double to right field and scored when Richardson followed with a double to left field. Then after Mortimer walked and Guyette was replaced by Chris Goodman, Bruce walked to load the bases. Jon Baeder followed by hitting into a double play, which scored Richardson from third. Mortimer then scored on a wild pitch.

After the Wildcats scored a run in the sixth, WSU responded in its half of the inning. Richardson was hit by a John Meloan pitch. After Mortimer struck out, Bruce singled to left field. Baeder followed with his first hit of the series, a single to right field that plated Richardson. Bruce then scored on a wild pitch. Following a Realini strike out, Fender singled to centerfield, scoring Baeder.

Arizona rallied in the seventh, scoring five runs, three on home runs, off a tiring MacKenzie. Kenyon replaced the Cougar starter with no outs and got out of the inning without further damage.

Kenyon allowed just two Arizona hits in the final two innings to seal the win.

The Cougars will now host Lewis-Clark State in non-conference action, Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
