Apr 19, 2003

WESTMINSTER - Freshman Jessica Vanderdys not only won her 10th singles match at the No. 5 position, but she also clinched the match helping the Colorado women's tennis team upset No. 24 Oklahoma, 4-3, Saturday night at the Ranch Country Club tennis courts in a Big Conference match played in Westminster.

Colorado, winners of its last three of four are ranked No. 46 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, improve to 12-7 overall and 5-6 in conference play. The win over the Sooners is the sixth this spring for the Buffaloes over a nationally ranked opponent and the highest win over a ranked opponent in head coach Nicole Kenneally's four-year tenure at CU.

"This is the biggest win since I've been here," said coach Kenneally. "It was great effort and the girls played well. OU is a tough team and it's unfortunate their No. 2 player suffered an injury."

Oklahoma (18-5, 7-4) lost their second consecutive match after winning its last six in a row, won the doubles point taking two of three points. CU even the match at 1-1, when sophomore Katherine Anne Lutgert defeated Elena Jirova in a shortened match as a result of Jirova suffering an injury and could not continue. Lutgert won the first set 6-4.

OU quickly took the lead at 2-1 when No. 80 Anda Perianu defeated senior Dominique Lemperle at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2. From there, it was all Colorado as the home team won three of four singles points for a 4-3 advantage and the team win.

Sophomore Kendra Strandemo, senior Lia Dimingo and Vanderdys all won in straight-sets leading CU to victory. Strandemo won her 22nd match of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 4; Dimingo won her eighth match of the spring with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3; and Vanderdys improved her record to 10-2 at No. 5 taking a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

In doubles, senior Sarah Burrows and Vanderdys improved their No. 3 doubles mark to 9-3 with an 8-5 win.

Colorado continues its season at next weekend's Big 12 Conference tournament from April 24-27 in Kansas City.
