No. 20 Oregon Softball Falls 7-3 To Oregon State

April 19, 2003

EUGENE - Oregon State used a strong offensive attack to defeat No. 20 Oregon, 7-3, in front of 671 fans at Howe Field Saturday and avoid a series sweep by Oregon. With the win, Oregon State improves to 26-22 overall, 2-10 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon fell to 24-14, 4-8. The Ducks have 11 games remaining in the season - including a non-conference doubleheader with Nevada Tuesday afternoon - and need just one win to assure a .500 record and a bid to the postseason.

'Today just wasn't our day,' Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. 'We are capable of playing much better and I'm confident that we'll come out strong in our next appearance.'

With a 2-1 lead, Oregon State broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four runs to go ahead 6-1. Cara Maxey walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third on Clare Burnum's second double of the game. Brynnen Guthrie reached on an Oregon error to load the bases and both Maxey and Burnum scored on a single by catcher Shelly Prochaska. Vanessa Iapala scored Guthrie on a groundout to second base. Prochaska then stole home during Adrienne Alo's at-bat for the final run of the inning.

Freshman Beth Boskovich doubled in the bottom of the sixth inning and senior Alyssa Laux hit her third home run of the season to narrow the gap, 7-3, but the Ducks never got closer.

Oregon State had the early lead in the game after Burnum hit a home run on the very first pitch of the game to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and right fielder Steph Adams hit the Beavers' second homer of the game with two outs in the second inning to extend the lead to 2-0.

In the bottom of the second, Oregon catcher Jenn Poore hit the third home run of the game - a solo shot to lead off the inning - to pull Oregon within a run, 2-1.

The Ducks take a break from Pac-10 play, hosting Nevada in a doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m.
