April 19, 2003

University of California freshman Teak Wilburn tied the Cal freshman high jump record with a mark of 7-3.25 (invitational section) in the final day of competition, Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays. Additionally, the Golden Bears men's 4x100 meter relay team was victorious, winning the event in a season-best and NCAA regional qualifying time of 40.56. The relays were hosted by Mt. San Antonio Community College in Walnut, Calif.

For Wilburn-who has already bested NCAA regional and Pac-10 championship qualifying standards-the jump stands as his best this season. The men's 4x100m relay team was comprised of senior Nick Mazur, sophomore Toby Atawo, freshman Chris Boykin and sophomore Ricci Dula. The women's 4x100m relay team of sophomore Shannan Hawes and freshmen Monica Green, Jacqueline Earls and Antonette Carter, also fared well, placing fifth in a season-best and NCAA qualifying time of 46.25.

In other men's track events, Dula finished third in the 100m with a team and season-best time of 10.62. That time also meets Pac-10 qualifying standards. Other top 10 finishes included junior Tim Bogdanof's fifth-place showing in the 110m hurdles (14.24). Bogdanof turned in a team and season-best performance in the 400m hurdles, clocking a 52.43 finish to qualify for the Pac-10 championships.

On the women's side, senior April Holliverse finished sixth in the 100m hurdles with a season-best and NCAA and Pac-10 qualifying time of 13.92. Freshman Osarhiemen Omwanghe finished 10th in the 100m hurdles in 14.08. She has already turned in a NCAA regional and Pac-10 qualifying performance in the 100m hurdles this season. Freshman Mary Meyman also ran a season-best and Pac-10 qualifying time in the 100m hurdles (14.17). Junior Deanna Slaton placed eighth in the 400m hurdles in a season-best and NCAA and Pac-10 qualifying time of 59.37. Holliverse and Omwanghe also posted season-best times in the 400m hurdles finishing in 1:01.18 and 1:01.26, respectively. In the 100m dash, Earls finished 10th in a season-best and Pac-10 qualifying time of 11.99, becoming the second woman on Cal's team to run the race in under 12 seconds this season. Hawes also ran a season-best time on Saturday, finishing the 200m in 24.97. The 4x400m relay team of juniors Stephanie Cowling and Chloe Jarvis, Omwanghe and Slaton posted a season-best and NCAA qualifying time of 3:38.38.

In the field events, junior Amin Nikfar finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 58-11.50. Nikfar met NCAA and Pac-10 postseason qualifying marks earlier this season. Junior Bruce Giron placed sixth in the triple jump with an outdoor-best mark of 49-10, while sophomore David Glasgow finished seventh in the university/open high jump (6-7.50). Giron has already posted NCAA regional and Pac-10 championships qualifying jumps this season and Glasgow has met Pac-10 qualifying standards. Junior Jenna Johnson finished eighth in the shot put (48-5.25).
