All four draws for the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai were released today, and five Bruins were chosen to participate. Laura Gordon, Anya Loncaric, and Shilpa Joshi will compete in the singles draw, while Nina Yaftali and Kate Jolson will compete in the invitational singles draw. UCLA will send one doubles team to Ojai, when Joshi and Loncaric compete in the main doubles tournament. All opening round singles matches will take place on Thursday at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club, and the opening round doubles match will be on Friday, also at OVAC.
Laura Gordon will face Arizona State's Adria Engel in the first round at 11 a.m. Gordon went 9-13 in dual match play this year, and 14-18 counting preseason tournament play. Engel split the two times she has faced a Bruin opponent this year. Currently ranked 11th in the nation, Engel defeated UCLA's Sara Walker on March 21, but fell to Walker on March 29.
Shilpa Joshi will face Oregon's Courtney Nagle at 8 a.m. Joshi is 4-6 in dual match play this year and 5-8 with preseason tournaments. Nagle lost her only meeting with a Bruin in dual-match play this year, falling to Sarah Gregg on March 7. Nagle is ranked 44th in the nation.
Anya Loncaric will go up against Arizona State's Lauren Colalillo at 12:30 p.m. Loncaric is 11-10 in dual-match play and 13-15 with preseason tournaments. Colalillo also split her two meetings with a Bruin in dual-match play this year, defeating Laura Gordon on March 21 and losing to Susi Wild on March 29.
Nina Yaftali faces Washington's Kathy Chi at 11 a.m. Yaftali has appeared just once in dual-match play this year, beating LMU's Erin Sanchez in February. She is 2-2 counting preseason tournament play. Chi did not face UCLA this year.
Kate Jolson goes up against Stanford's Joanna Kao at 8 a.m. Jolson has not played for the Bruins in the dual-match season, but did post a 3-3 record in preseason tournaments. Kao did not face the Bruins this year.
UCLA's doubles team of Joshi and Loncaric will face USC's Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson on Friday at 12:30 p.m. The Bruin duo went 1-4 in dual-match play this year, and 4-4 counting preseason tournaments. The 19th-ranked Trojan combination defeated its Bruin opponent both times the two schools have competed this year, downing Laura Gordon and Sara Walker on January 31 and Sarah Gregg and Susi Wild on March 5.
Second-round play for both singles draws will take place Thursday afternoon at either 2 p.m. or 3:30 p.m., and the doubles team would compete again on Friday at 3:30 p.m. with a win.
