Trojans Mount One Of Biggest Comebacks Ever In 13-12 Win

LOS ANGELES - Freshman Ryan Broderick (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) went 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBI, including the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th, and the USC Trojans registered the 13-12 come-from-behind win against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. Down 10-0, the Trojans scored a run in the fifth, five runs in the seventh, six in the eighth and the game-winner in the 10th.
Utilizing a lineup of reserves in the later innings, Broderick tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with two outs when he hit his first collegiate home run with a three-run shot to right on the first pitch off UCSB's Justin Segal.
In the 10th inning, freshman Baron Frost singled to right and stole second. With two outs, Eric Posthumus (2-3) threw a wild pitch, advancing to Frost. Broderick then hit an infield single to score Frost for the game-winner. Frost went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Freshman Jason Filarey went 2-for-4 with four RBI and provided a key hit with a bases-loaded triple in the seventh inning to make it a 10-6 contest.
USC improved to 21-19 overall while UC Santa Barbara lost its ninth straight and fell to 18-22 overall.
Bret Butler (1-3) earned the win with two scoreless innings, striking out five batters. On the evening, seven different Trojan pitchers recorded a total of 18 strikeouts.
The Gauchos scored four runs in the first off USC starter Fraser Dizard and six runs off Jordan Olson in the third and fourth innings. Nic Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with two RBI in a losing effort for the Gauchos.
The Trojans will travel to Oregon State for a Pac-10 Conference series, beginning on Friday (April 25) at 5 p.m. The series will continue on Saturday (April 26) at 4 p.m. and Sunday (April 27) at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on usctrojans.com.
