Arizona Men's Tennis Opens Day One Of Pac-10 Tournament

OJAI Calif. - The No. 33 Arizona men's tennis team (9-10, 3-4 Pac-10) competed in the first rounds of the singles main and invitational draws Thursday, April 24, 2003. Arizona fielded four men in the main draw while three men competed in the invitational draw.
Competing for Arizona in the main draw where sophomore Colin O'Grady, junior Carl Hagman, junior Whi Kim and sophomore Paul Warkentin. O'Grady fell to James Pade of Stanford, 6-1, 6-3. Carl Hagman lost his opening match to Rodrigo Grilli of UCLA in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. After losing the first set to No. 124 Johan Berg of USC, 6-4, Kim battled back to win the second set, 6-7. Kim went on to lose the third set, 6-3. No. 48 Kowalczyk of California defeated Warkentin, 6-3, 6-3.
Arizona placed two freshmen into the invitational draw and one sophomore. Daniel Andrus won Arizona's lone match Thursday by defeating Scott Felsenthal of Washington, 6-3, 6-1. In the round of 16, Andrus took Steve Berke to three sets, losing, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Tim Mullane lost his first round match to Jason Menke of Oregon, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Chris Gessner fell in his opening round match to Mik Kedvonova of California, 6-0, 6-1.
The Wildcats will take the courts again tomorrow, Friday, April 25, competing in the doubles portion of the Pac-10 tournament.
