Day One Done for Women's Tennis at Pac-10 Championships

April 24, 2003

OJAI, Calif. - Despite missing two key players due to injury, the No. 40 Oregon women's tennis team had one of its most successful days at the Pac-10 Championships Thursday in Ojai, Calif. Sophomore Daria Panova, ranked No. 20 in the nation, led the charge for the Ducks by advancing to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket.

'I'm really pleased with the way we competed,' Oregon coach Nils Schyllander said. 'Even in the matches we lost, we executed our game plan and played really well. Some people really stepped it up for us today. It was a good day for the Ducks.'

Panova got things going in the first round by knocking off Arizona's Dianne Hollands, who is ranked No. 49 in the nation. Panova won the first set easily and was cruising in the second set with a 3-0 lead. Hollands fought back to take the next six games and won the second set. Panova got back on track in the third to eventually win the match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

In the second round, Panova overpowered Washington State's Lorena Arias, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. Panova will play Washington's Erin Boisclair, who is ranked No. 99 in the nation, in the quarterfinals Friday morning.

Freshman Jamie Marshall and sophomore Ester Bak also played in the championship draw, with each player advancing to the second round. Marshall defeated Washington State's Chris Martinez, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, in the first round and then lost a close match to Arizona State's Adria Engel, the No. 5-ranked player in the country, 6-2, 7-6.

Bak ousted UCLA's Shilpa Joshi in the first round, 6-4, 6-3, before falling to Cal's Raquel Kops-Jones, the No. 7-ranked player in the nation, 6-2, 6-3. Bak took the place of junior Courtney Nagle in the championship draw. Nagle sat out with a sore back, but will still play in the doubles draw, which begins Friday, with Panova. Also missing in the championship draw was senior captain Monika Gieczys, who rested her sore wrists. Gieczys will team with Marshall in the doubles bracket.

In the invitational draw, freshman Anna Leksinska dominated Arizona's Kristy Randono, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round, but lost to Cal's Nicole Havlicek in the second round, 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Julie Merle lost in the first round to Washington's Dinka Hadzic, 7-5, 6-2.
