Kayla Burt Slated To Throw Out First Pitch Prior To Friday's Mariner's Game

April 24, 2003

SEATTLE, Wash. - Former Washington women's basketball player Kayla Burt is slated to throw out the first pitch prior to Friday's Mariner's game against the Detroit Tigers at 7:05 p.m. at Safeco Field.

Burt will be joined on the mound by five of her Husky teammates who assisted in life-saving efforts when her heart stopped beating on New Year's Eve, 2002. Senior Loree Payne, juniors Giuliana and Gioconda Mendiola, and freshmen Nicole Castro and Erica Schelly were all present in the house when Burt collapsed that evening. The Mendiola sisters performed CPR on Burt until paramedics arrived at the scene.

Following the sudden-death episode, Burt was diagnosed with a rare heart condition called Long Q-T Syndrome, prematurely ending her basketball career. The sophomore guard was named the team's Most Inspirational Player this season, an award named in her honor beginning this year.
