Kops-Jones Cruises into Quarterfinals at Pac-10 Championships

April 24, 2003

Ojai, Calif. - Junior All-American #7 Raquel Kops-Jones advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Pac-10 Championships this afternoon in Ojai, with consecutive straight-set victories over her opponents in the first two rounds. She is the only Cal player that remains alive in the main draw, as #33 Christina Fusano and #84 Catherine Lynch both faltered in first round action.

Kops-Jones drew a first round date with ASU's Cindy Sureephong and stayed true to form with an easy 6-2, 6-1 decision to advance to the Round of 16. Her next opponent, Ester Bak of Oregon, was fresh off her own 6-4, 6-3 first round victory over UCLA's Shilpa Joshi. Kops-Jones proved her might once again, completing a 6-2, 6-3 victory to advance to the quarterfinals, setting up a confrontation with Stanford's #8 Alice Barnes at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. The two previously met in a thrilling match in the finals of the Northwest Regional Championships with the Cal ace topping the Cardinal freshman, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-1, to take the crown.

Both Fusano and Lynch drew higher ranked opponents in their initial matches, and both dropped first round decisions. Arizona's #6 Emilie Scribot exacted payback for a March 7 loss to Cal's senior captain with a 6-3, 6-4 victory to oust Fusano from the competition. USC's #67 Maureen Diaz fought off a three-set marathon with Lynch, coming out on top of a 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-1 decision.

The four players in Cal's Invitational Draw fared a little better than their higher seeded counterparts, as all four completed first round victories, but only two of the four advanced to quarterfinal action. Junior Jody Scheldt, the team's dual match win's leader, fought off her first two opponents in straight sets. In the Round of 32, Stanford's Jessica Leck was no match for the Cal junior as Scheldt cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Washington State's Zsofi Fodor was a better challenge, but Scheldt disposed of her with a 6-3, 6-4 decision. She will face Arizona State's Joslynn Burkett Friday at 9:30 a.m., in a rematch of Scheldt's victory in the finals of the Pac-10 Indoor Championships consolation bracket.

Junior Nicole Havlicek didn't allow the Cougars' Natalie Dow a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 rout in the first round, and turned in a 7-5, 6-0 performance over Anna Leksinska of Oregon in the Round of 16. That sets up a quarterfinal matchup with Nina Yaftali of UCLA at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, April 25.

Two other Cal players did not fare as well as their counterparts. Junior Kristen Case blanked Washington's Amy Allen, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round, but dropped a hard-fought match with Kelly Perry of Arizona, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to end the day. Freshman Jessica Shu ousted the Sun Devils' Paulie Sabion, 6-1, 6-2, but ran into the Cougar's Nora Gaal in the next round - losing a 6-1, 7-6 heartbreaker.

In the first two rounds, the Bears record vs. the Pac-10 is as follows: 0-0 vs. UCLA, 0-1 vs. USC, 1-0 vs. Stanford, 2-0 vs. Washington, 2-1 vs. Washington State, 2-0 vs. Oregon, 0-2 vs. Arizona and 2-0 vs. Arizona State.

Tomorrow's singles competition will commence at 8:00 a.m. with the first round of doubles competition beginning at 11:00 a.m.
