Ricky Barnes Named Finalist for Ben Hogan Award

NORMAN, Okla. - University of Arizona men's golfer Ricky Barnes was named a finalist for the 2003 Ben Hogan Award, which is presented annually to the top NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA golfer. The award covers all collegiate and amateur competitions during the last 12 months.
Barnes is one of five finalists for the award. He is joined on the list by Bill Haas of Wake Forest, Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State, Ryan Moore of UNLV and D.J. Trahan of Clemson.
Barnes, the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, finished as the low amateur at the 2003 Masters with a four-round total of 291 (+3). It was the lowest total by an amateur at the prestigious event since 1998. He has a 71.56 stroke average in 10 collegiate events this season and 18 of his 27 rounds played have been at par or better with a low round of 66. The senior from Stockton, Calif., has six top-10 finishes and a top-20 effort to his credit. He also posted a top 20 finish on the PGA Tour, as he tied for 18th place on March 2 at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson with a four-round total of 69-70-68-70=277 (-11).
In addition to his collegiate exploits, Barnes also led the United States to victory at the 2002 World Amateur Golf Championship. He also earned a pair of top-10 finishes in amateur competitions, as Barnes tied for second place at the Northeast Amateur and tied for eighth place at the Players Amateur.
The award is presented by The Friends of Golf and Colonial Country Club, in cooperation with Bank of America and the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Hogan Award selection committee will name the winner on May 9. The presentation will be made at Colonial Country Club on May 19.
The University of Arizona men's golf team, currently ranked No. 3 nationally in the Precept/Golf Coaches Association of America Coaches Poll, will next be in action April 28-30 at the 2003 Pacific-10 Conference Championships in Los Angeles, Calif.
