Ricky Barnes Receives U.S. National Team Invite

FAR HILLS, N.J. - University of Arizona men's golfer Ricky Barnes was one of four players selected Friday by the United States Golf Association to represent the United States at the inaugural Copa de Las Americas.
Barnes was one of four golfers, all 2002 USGA champions, chosen to participate in this amateur golf event, which includes countries from North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. In addition to Barnes, the United States team will include Becky Lucidi, the U.S. Women's Amateur champion; Kathy Hartwiger, the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion; and Ryan Moore, the U.S. Amateur Public Links champion. Team members were chosen by the USGA international selection committees.
Barnes, the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, finished as the low amateur at the 2003 Masters with a four-round total of 291 (+3). It was the lowest total by an amateur at the prestigious event since 1998. He has a 71.56 stroke average in 10 collegiate events this season and 18 of his 27 rounds played have been at par or better with a low round of 66. The senior from Stockton, Calif., has six top-10 finishes and a top-20 effort to his credit. He also posted a top 20 finish on the PGA Tour, as he tied for 18th place on March 2 at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson with a four-round total of 69-70-68-70=277 (-11). He also helped the United States capture the 2002 World Amateur Team Championship.
The Copa de Las Americas is scheduled for June 25-28, at the Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort and Country Club in Dorado, Puerto Rico. Two-member teams from as many as 32 countries will play 72 holes in team stroke play competition in three categories - male, female and overall team. The Puerto Rico Golf Association will host this first-time event.
The competition will be contested on Dorado Beach's East and West courses, both designed by Robert Trent Jones. The Hyatt Dorado's courses will also serve as the site of the 2004 World Amateur Team Championships.
