Sprinters Shine at Drake Relays; Throwers Open Action at UC San Diego

April 25, 2003

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State track and field teams split its squad into three for the weekend with two-thirds of the group opening action Friday on the road. The sprinters and jumpers ventured to the long-running Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and turned in impressive performances while the throwers headed west to the UC San Diego Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif. The runners at the Oregon Invitational will all compete Saturday.

At the Drake Relays, the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams captured first in their respective heats while the women also took first in the 4x100m event. The men took second. For the women, the 4x100m time of 45.18 was the fastest on the day earning the squad top-billing for the Saturday finals while the 3:40.08 clocked in the mile relay was the fourth-fastest on the day.

On the men's side, the 4x400m relay team continued its undefeated campaign in the event by winning its heat by nearly four seconds and posting the best time on the day at 3:05.56. The 4x100m team took second in its heat and advanced to the finals with the fourth-fastest time in the event.

Individually, Porchea Carroll (So., Oxnard, Calif.) ran an 11.75 in the 100m dash to place third in her heat to record a personal record and the top time on the team so far this year. Unfortunately for Carroll, her time was the ninth-fastest on the day and one place from advancing to the finals. On the men's side, three individuals competed with Trevell Quinley (So., Tracy, Calif.) taking 10th in the long jump with a leap of 7.25m (23-9.50). Asokah Muhammad (So., Oakland, Calif.) competed in the same event and took 22nd with a jump of 6.68 (21-11.00). The final individual was Casey Clark (Sr., Colbert, Wash.) who failed to clear a height in the high jump.

Three throwers participated in the UC San Diego event with Travis Jones (Jr., San Diego, Calif.), Sandra Orsund (Jr., Plymouth, Ind.) and Jenae Sonne (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) each competing in the hammer throw. Orsund led the way with a seventh-place finish with a heave of 54.23m (177-11) while Sonne came in at 14th with a throw of 49.44m (162-2). On the men's side, Jones placed 11th with a throw of 55.45m (181-11).

Competition at the three sites concludes Saturday. ASU returns home for its final home meet of the year as it welcomes intrastate rivals Arizona and Northern Arizona to the Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium on May 3 for the annual Double Dual. Field events begin at 1 p.m. and running gets underway at 7 p.m.
