Alex Vlaski To Play In Pac-10 Championship Singles Final Sunday

OJAI, Calif. - Washington sophomore Alex Vlaski has advanced to the Pac-10 Singles Championship final for the second straight season after defeating Stanford's David Martin in the semifinals during the third day of the conference tournament in Ojai, Calif., Saturday.

Vlaski, ranked 10th in the nation, took care of 12th-ranked Martin in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. He will now face UCLA's Marcin Matkowski who defeated Cal's John Paul Fruttero in the other semifinal match. Matkowski was the top-seed in the tournament is ranked 26th nationally. The Pac-10 final will take place Sunday at 11 a.m.

Vlaski and Matkowski have met one previous time this season, with Matkowski winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in the dual match between these two teams in Los Angeles on April 12.

In last year's Pac-10 singles final, Vlaski fell to the player he defeated in this year's quarterfinals, Rodrigo Grilli from UCLA, in straight sets. Vlaski's victory today also gave him sole possession of second place on UW's singles season wins list with 32. The record is 39 set by Chet Crile during the 1992-93 season.

Washington also had two players competing in the singles back draw today, with junior Nick Weiss defeating Arizona's Tim Mullane and sophomore Scott Felsenthal falling to Cal's Patrick Briaud.
