Baseball Falls Late To No. 4 Stanford, 10-9

April 26, 2003

PALO ALTO, Calif.- The Arizona baseball team blew its seventh save of the season, falling, 10-9, to No. 4-ranked Stanford at Sunken Diamond on Saturday. The Cardinal (28-12, 10-4 Pac-10) scored four runs in the eighth inning off of the Wildcat bullpen to steal the victory and even the series at a game apiece.

After taking a 9-6 lead in the top of the eighth, senior Wes Zlotoff walked Stanford leadoff hitter Ryan Garko and then threw Danny Putnam's come-backer past shortstop John Hardy into centerfield field for an error to place runners on the corners with no outs. Stanford's Jed Lowrie cut the lead to 9-7 in the next at-bat with a single to right, scoring Garko.

Classmate Brian Pemble spelled Zlotoff on the mound, but couldn't close out the inning, surrendering a run-scoring infield single to pinch hitter Donny Lucy and a two-run double to Sam Fuld to complete the comeback and hand the Cardinal a 10-9 lead.

Stanford closer Brett Manship retired the Wildcats in order in the top of the ninth to finish off the come-from-behind win and earn his fifth save of the season.

Pemble (2-3), who gave up the go-ahead run, was charged with his third loss of the season after working just a third of an inning. Stanford's Jonny Dyer (2-1) picked up his second win of the year for the Cardinal in relief.

The late-inning meltdown erased an outstanding day for Arizona junior Brian Anderson. The third-year starter, who hit UA's game-winning home run on Friday, hit an inside-the-park grand slam in the third inning and finished 4 for 5 with a triple and five RBIs on Saturday.

Classmate Moises Duran helped Arizona to its doomed 9-6 lead with a two-run homer, his 11th of the season, in UA's three-run eighth.

Arizona (29-16, 8-6), which fell two games behind Stanford in the conference standings, will close out the three-game series with Cardinal on Sunday. First pitch for the series finale is set for 1 p.m. and the game can be heard live on the radio on KNST (790-AM).
