Kops-Jones Advances to Title Match at Pac-10 Championships

April 26, 2003

Ojai, Calif. - Junior All-American #7 Raquel Kops-Jones advanced to the title match of the main draw while Jody Scheldt and Nicole Havlicek will face each other in the finals of the invitational draw, giving Cal three of four players still alive in the two singles draws at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. Kops-Jones and #20 Daria Panova of Oregon will challenge each other for sights to the Pac-10 crown at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 27.

Kops-Jones drew a first round date with ASU's Cindy Sureephong and stayed true to form with an easy 6-2, 6-1 decision to advance to the Round of 16. Her next opponent, Ester Bak of Oregon, was fresh off her own 6-4, 6-3 first round victory over UCLA's Shilpa Joshi. Kops-Jones proved her might once again, completing a 6-2, 6-3 victory to advance to the quarterfinals, setting up a confrontation with Stanford's #8 Alice Barnes. The two previously met in a thrilling match in the finals of the Northwest Regional Championships with the Cal ace topping the Cardinal freshman, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-1, to take the crown, but Barnes retired due to injury this time, sending Kops-Jones into the semifinals. Arizona's #39 Maja Mlakar was no match in the semis, as Kops-Jones cruised into the title match with a 6-0, 6-4 decision. The last remaining hurdle to the Pac-10 title will be Oregon's #20 Daria Panova at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Panova defeated Kops-Jones earlier this season, March 2, in the two squads' dual match in Eugene.

In the invitational draw, juniors Jody Scheldt and Nicole Havlicek set up an all-Cal finale as the two Bears defeated their respective opponents to earn spots in the finals. Scheldt was tested for the first time in the tourney, being pushed to three sets from Washington's Colleen Gray, but the Cal dual wins leader persevered with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory. Havlicek completed her sixth consecutive straight set victory, and fourth of this tournament, this time with an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over Stanford's Joanna Kao. Scheldt and Havlicek will square off at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, guaranteeing a California invitational draw title.

In doubles play, #4 Kops-Jones and senior captain Christina Fusano continued their success as a doubles tandem, improving to 29-9 on the year with an 8-3 victory over Colleen Gray and Dea Sumantri of Washington. The Cal duo will challenge for its second consecutive Pac-10 doubles championship title Sunday, April 27 at 12:30 p.m. vs. #48 Maja Mlakar and Emilie Scribot of Arizona. Kristen Case and Jessica Shu's run was ended this afternoon, as they lost 8-2 to USC's Bernadette Bayani and Melissa Esmero in the Round of 16 invitational draw.

Through the first four rounds, the Bears record vs. Pac-10 opponents is as follows: 1-0 vs. UCLA, 0-1 vs. USC, 3-0 vs. Stanford, 3-0 vs. Washington, 2-1 vs. Washington State, 2-0 vs. Oregon, 1-2 vs. Arizona and 3-0 vs. Arizona State. In doubles, Cal owns a 1-0 record vs. Washington State, 1-0 vs. Arizona, 2-0 vs. Washington and 0-1 vs. USC.
