Softball Slams Arizona State, Wins 5-2
April 26, 2003
EUGENE - Oregon senior Lynsey Haij hit a fifth-inning grand slam to lift No. 20 Oregon to a 5-2 victory over No. 12 Arizona State at Howe Field Saturday. It was Haij's second home run of the season and her first career grand slam. With the win, Oregon improves to 27-15 overall, 5-9 Pacific-10 Conference while Arizona State falls to 26-16, 5-9.
'I am very pleased with how we played today,' Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. 'We kept battling and were able to put together a solid offensive and defensive effort. This was a great way to respond after yesterday's loss.'
Freshman pitcher Amy Harris (13-11) struck out five batters in six innings pitched to pick up the win, while senior Andrea Vidlund notched her seventh save of the season. Vidlund is now tied for first all-time in the Pac-10 for saves in a season.
Senior Alyssa Laux's fifth inning RBI double, driving in freshman Beth Boskovich, accounted for the Ducks' other run. Arizona State's Phelan Wright hit a two-run home run that scored shortstop Kara Brun in the sixth inning to finally put the Sun Devils on the board.
Haij's four RBI ties a career best for the Vancouver, Wash., native while her home run is just her second against a Pac-10 team.
The Ducks host Arizona State again Sunday at 1 p.m. before heading to UCLA and Washington next weekend.
