Trojans Give Oregon State An Eyeful In Series Sweep

April 28, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jeff Clement hit his 18th home run of the season while Brian Bannister allowed only one run in seven innings Sunday as the USC Trojans completed the Pac-10 Conference series sweep with a 12-2 win at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Trojans have won 11 of their last 15 games and are now tied for third place in the conference with Arizona, one game behind leaders Stanford and Arizona State.

USC is now 24-19 on the season and 9-6 in Pac-10 play while Oregon State fell to 18-22 and 4-11 in the conference.

Clement moved into a tie for seventh on USC's all-time single season list for most home runs with three other players after hitting a three-run homer in the first. He added an RBI fielder's choice in the second and finished 1-for-4 with four RBI.

The freshman catcher suffered a scary moment in the second. After Joey Metropoulos hit a two-run triple to right, he was attempting to score when the relay throw by OSU shortstop Tony Calderon hit Clement in the face. Clement touched the plate and fell on his back for a minute as play stopped. After being treated, Clement remained in the game and suffered only a black eye.

Bannister (5-4) allowed only one run on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. For the weekend, the starting rotation of Bobby Paschal, Anthony Reyes and Bannister allowed a combined four runs in 19 2/3 innings of work.

USC scored three runs in the first and four in the second to open the game. Travis McAndrews went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Oregon State used seven pitchers and walked nine batters. The Beavers also committed five errors on the afternoon.

An unusual event occurred in the latter part of the game. Dale Legaspi, who was serving as first base coach during the entire weekend for the Trojans after volunteer assistant Rob Klein did not make the trip, entered the game as a pinch hitter and finished the game at second base.

The Trojans travel to UC Irvine on Tuesday (April 29) at 7 p.m. before hosting Stanford in a Pac-10 series, beginning on Friday (May 2) at 6 p.m. The series will continue with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday (May 3) and Sunday (May 4). All four games will be broadcast live on
