The 109th meeting between Stanford and California in the Big Meet is slated for Saturday, May 3, at Cobb Track & Angell Field ... The field events will start at 3:50 p.m. and the running events will start at 5:00 p.m. ... The meet will conclude with the men's 1,600 meter relay at 8:30 p.m. ... California's men's team leads the series against Stanford, 63-43-2, but the Cardinal has won the last two meets ... In 2001 at Stanford, the Cardinal scored a 82-81 decision, and in 2002, Stanford scored a decisive 94-69 verdict at Berkeley ... The Stanford-California women will be meeting for the 24th time with Stanford leading the series, 13-10 ... Stanford has won the last two meets, a 101.5 to 60.5 decision at Stanford two years, and a 101-62 verdict at Berkeley last year ... For the men, this series dates back to 1893, while the women started competing in the Big Meet in 1980.
The individual events for the Big Meet will be scored five points for first place, three points for second place, and one point for third place ... The relays will be scored five points for first place, no points for second place.
Six records were broken at last year's Big Meet at Berkeley ... Stanford's Grant Robison ran 3:42.14 in the 1,500 meters, while Cal's Bubba McLean set a new mark in the pole vault (18-0 1/2, 5.50m), Joe Berro of Cal in the javelin (220-2, 67.11m), Stanford's Laura Turner in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:13.47), Jennifer Joyce of Cal in the hammer (214-0, 65.23m) and Stanford's Kathleen Donoghue in the pole vault (13-5 1/4 (4.10m) ... The oldest men's Big Meet record is held by Ernie Cunliffe who ran a 1:47.7 in the 800 meters in 1960 ... The oldest women's Big Meet record is held by Marian Franklin who ran a 53.4 in the 400 meters in 1980 ... Chris Huffins, Cal's first-year head coach, holds the Big Meet record in the long jump (26-1 1/2, 7.96m) in 1991.

Several races and field events promise to be interesting ... In the men's 100 meters, Stanford's Milton Little has run 10.61 compared to Ricci Dula of Cal at 10.62 ... Also look for strong performances from Toby Atawo of Cal at 10.73, and Stanford's Nick Sebes at 10.78 ... Atawo has one of the top conference times in the 200 meters at 21.26 while Little checks in at 21.34 ... In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Kevin Davis of Cal has run 9:06.16 while Stanford's Sean Knapp has run 9:07.89 ... In the 110 meter hurdles, Tim Bogdanof of Cal has the league's sixth-best time at 14.05 while Stanford's Justin Williams has run 14.28 ... In the 400 meter relay, Stanford has the league's third-best time at 40.15, while Cal is fifth at 40.56 ... The field events will offer strong competition, including the discus where Stanford's Omer Inan has a season-best 194-0 (59.13m) while Cal's Tony Miranda has a season-best of 183-10 ... The Big Meet for women should also provide top times and marks ... Lache Bailey of Cal and Katie Hotchkiss of Stanford are 5-6 in the conference in the 800 meters at 2:08.48 and 2:08.53i, respectively ... In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Jeane Goff of Stanford has the Pac-10's best time at 10:24.32, while Cal's Abby Parker is fourth at 10:50.42 ... Stanford's Lindsey Johnson and Deanna Slaton of Cal are 1-2 in the 400 meter hurdles at 58.84 and 59.37, respectively.
Stanford has the top three times in the 1,500 meters with Grant Robison (3:43.07), Evan Fox (3:44.34) and Steve Loughlin (3:45.03) ... Louis Luchini and Ian Dobson are 1-3 in the conference in the 5,000 meters at 13:31.80 and 13:52.29, respectively ... The Cardinal ranks 1-2-3 in the 10,000 meters with Dobson (28:39.55), Luchini (28:41.13) and Adam Tenforde (28:43.18) ... Milton Little, the 2002 Pac-10 long jump champion, is #2 in the conference at 25-11 (7.90m) ... Nick Welihozkiy is #2 in the hammer (214-4, 65.33m) ... Omer Inan has thrown the discus 194-0 (59.13m), #3 in the Pac-10 ... On the women's side, Malindi Elmore has the Pac-10's best time (4:17.15) in the 1,500 meters ... Jeane Goff is #1 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:24.32), while Lauren Fleshman and Alicia Craig are 1-2 in the 5,000 meters at 15:23.94 and 15:25.75, respectively ... Jill Camarena is first in the conference in the shot put (55-10 1/2, 17.03m).
California has several athletes ranked among the leaders in the Pac-10 ... Teak Wilburn has high jumped 7-3 1/4 (2.22m) to rank first in the Pac-10 ... Bruce Giron has jumped 50-1 1/4 indoors in the triple jump ... Rhuben Williams has the Pac-10's fifth-best mark in the shot put (59-8 1/2) and is seventh in the hammer (195-0, 59.44m) ... Joe Berro has the league's second-best mark in the javelin at 201-6 (61.41m) ... Deanna Slaton is #2 in the Pac-10 in the 400 meter hurdles (59.37) ... Abby Parker is fourth in the Pac-10 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:50.42).
Several Stanford seniors will be competing in their final Big Meet on Saturday (5/3/03), including long jumper Milton Little ... Little has played a pivotal role in Stanford's victories the last two seasons against California ... Two years ago, Little finished second in the triple jump to give Stanford a 82-81 victory over the Golden Bears ... Last year, Little scored 14 individual points in winning the long jump, the 200 meters, second in the 100 meters and third in the triple jump ... Little's efforts helped produce the most number of points for a Cardinal men's team over California since 1933 when Stanford scored a 95-36 win ... The 25-point victory margin was the largest margin of victory since a 87-58 decision in 1965 ... It was also the first time since 1966 that Stanford had beaten Cal on their home (Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field).
Numerous Stanford athletes have qualified for the NCAA West Regionals on May 30-31 at Cobb Track & Angell Field ... Forty-one athletes and four relay teams have qualified for regional competition ... Fifty-seven athletes have met the qualifying standards for the Pac-10 Championships which will be held May17-18 at USC.
Four school records and three freshman school marks have been broken thus far this year ... Lauren Fleshman ran a 15:23.94 at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/17/03) to beat PattiSue Plumer's time of 15:29.00 set in 1984 ... Fleshman's time is the best time for a collegiate runner this year, and third-best all-time for an American runner ... Lindsey Johnson ran a 13.61 at the Stanford Invitational (3/29/03) to shatter the old mark of 13.79 by Bernadette Armand in 1997 and 1998 ... The 1,600 meter relay team (Undine Becker, Nashonme Johnson, Christine Moschella, Chauntae Bayne) set a new standard by being timed in 3:34.82 ... The old time was 3:41.27 set in 1995 ... The women's distance medley relay team of Malindi Elmore, Chinny Offor, Katie Hotchkiss and Lauren Fleshman ran a 11:03.59 to win at the Drake Relays (4/25/03) ... The old distance medley relay time was 11:06.23, set in 2000 ... Alicia Craig set a new freshman record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:25.75 at the Mt. SAC Relays (4/17/03) ... Craig's time is second-best overall at Stanford ... Samantha Shepard established a new freshman record in the pole vault with a leap of 13-0 3/4 (3.98m) ... The old mark was 13-0 1/4 (3.97m) by Kathleen Donoghue in 2000 ... Nashonme Johnson set a freshman school record with a time of 54.61 in the 400 meters ... The old record was 54.95 by Jayna Smith in 1997.
Lauren Fleshman, the two-time NCAA champion in the 5,000 meters, broke the Pac-10 record in winning the 5,000 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays (4/17/03) ... Fleshman's time of 15:23.94 easily broke the previous conference record time of 15:34.55 by Annette Hand of Oregon in 1988 ... Fleshman's time was third-best all-time for an American runner in the 5,000 meters ... Fleshman's time was a school record and broke the previous time of 15:29.0 by PattiSue Plumer in 1984 ... Fleshman is the two-time NCAA champion (2001, 2002) in the 5,000 meters ... Fleshman was the 2002 Pac-10 champion in the 5,000 meters.
She hasn't received the attention of some of the more higher profile distance runners, but Katie Hotchkiss has enjoyed an outstanding 2003 outdoor season for the Cardinal ... Hotchkiss, a junior from Fremont, recently ran on three winning relay teams at the Drake Relays ... Hotchkiss ran the second leg on the winning 4 x 800 meter relay team which was timed in 8:36.70, the best time in the world this year ... Hotchkiss ran the third leg on the winning distance medley relay team which broke the school and meet record at 11:03.59 ... Hotchkiss ran the second leg on the winning 4 x 1 mile relay team ... Hotchkiss has run a NCAA West Regional Qualifying time of 4:23.34, and a Pac-10 qualifing time of 2:08.53.
Stanford's distance running team proved to be the stars of the prestigious Drake Relays ... The Cardinal produced winners in five of six events entered ... Stanford's women's team chalked victories in the 4 x 800 meter relay, the distance medley relay, and the 4 x 1 mile relay ... Stanford's time of 8:36.70 in the 4 x 800 meter relay is the best time in the world this year ... Katie Hotchkiss ran legs on all three Cardinal winning teams ... The Cardinal men's 4 x 1 mile relay team produced the best time in the world this year at 16:31.19 ... Milton Little, the 2002 Pac-10 champion, won the long jump (25-9 1/2, 7.86m) while Sara Bei won the 1,500 meters (4:20.88).
The Stanford-California dual meet (The Big Meet) will be held on May 3, and the event will be televised on College Sports Television ... CSTV is dedicated to offering the widest variety of athletic competition of 1,200 universities and colleges across all of the major conferences at every level of college sports ... College Sports Television can be viewed only on Direct TV ... The meet will be televised on Tuesday, May 13, at 5:00 p.m.
Stanford's Cobb Track & Angell Field will be the site of the NCAA West Regionals on May 30-31 ... This year, the qualifying standards for the 2003 NCAA Track & Field Championships have been changed ... The NCAA will use Regional Championship meets to determine qualifying for the national meet ... The top five finishers in each individual event, and top three relay teams from each of the four regionals nationwide will earn a berth to the NCAA Nationals at Sacramento State ... The NCAA will then round out the Championships field by selecting the highest-ranking individuals (approximately six per individual event and five per relay) from the national collegiate performance lists, provided those athletes competed at their respective Regional meets and were not among the finishers to earn automatic NCAA berths ... The long exception to the Regional qualifying system will be the 10,000 meters and multi-events, which will not be subject to Regional competition ... Athletes will continue to qualify for the NCAA Championships in those events as they have in the past, by meeting pre-determined provisional and automatic qualifying standards.
