Stanford, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Stanford softball team put up five runs on eight hits to defeat visiting Saint Mary's 5-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday night at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improve to 36-20 overall heading into this weekend's games against Arizona State and top-ranked Arizona, while the Gaels fall to 23-24 on the season.
Stanford put the first run on the board in the third inning. Leah Nelson (Oakland, CA) led off with a single and was replaced by Heather Shook (Whittier, CA) at first base. Following a sacrifice bunt by Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA), Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana, CA) delivered a base hit up the middle to score Shook.
The Cardinal went up 2-0 in the fourth when Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, TX) drilled her ninth home run of the season to left field.
Saint Mary's best scoring opportunity occurred in the sixth inning when they put runners on second and third with two outs. Stanford reliever Laura Severson (Frankfort, IL) got Jordann Bass to ground out and end the inning.
Stanford got three more runs in the bottom of the sixth off of four hits. Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) and Bendig each had RBI singles, while Nelson drew a bases loaded walk to score a run.
Severson then shut down the Gaels in the seventh, retiring them in order to preserve the shutout and the 5-0 Stanford win.
Bendig led the Cardinal offensively, going two-for-three at the plate with two RBI. Allister also added two hits to Stanford's eight-hit attack. Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) pitched the first two innings and finished with four strikeouts and allowed just one hit. Severson came in relief and got her fifth win of the season to improve to 5-2. She fanned three Gael batters and scattered three hits in five innings of work.
