Women's Tennis Earns NCAA Tournament Berth

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 22 Arizona women's tennis team was selected as the 16th seed at the 2003 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship. The Wildcats, 9-11 on the season, will head to Cambridge, Mass., to take on the Niagara University Purple Eagles in the first round.
Arizona finished the regular season ranked No. 22, with three singles players in the top 50 and one doubles team in the top 50. Graduate student Emilie Scribot peaked at the end of the season at No. 5. Sophomore Maja Mlakar ended the season at No. 29, and sophomore Dianne Hollands finished at No. 45. In doubles, Arizona's duo of Mlakar and Scribot peaked at No. 24 to end the season.
Arizona finished the season with a record of 9-11, 3-5 in the Pac-10. The Cats also took home the Pac-10 Tournament trophy last weekend with the most individual wins.
Niagara finished its season with a record of 15-1, and went undefeated in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Niagara earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the MAAC Tournament last weekend. The NCAA berth marks the school's first-ever participation in the tournament.
Arizona and Niagara will face each other in the first round on May 9 at host Harvard University, in the Beren Tennis Center.
NCAA singles and doubles championship selections will be announced Thursday, May 1.
