O.D. Vincent Named Pac-10 Coach of the Year

May 1, 2003

After winning its first Pac-10 title in 18 years, the awards are beginning to roll in for the UCLA men's golf team. Head Coach O.D. Vincent was named 2003 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and juniors John Merrick and Steve Conway earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors.

Vincent, in his first season at UCLA, guided the Bruins to six tournament victories in 12 starts, including a 27-shot victory in the conference championship. In 1999, Vincent received similar honors while serving as head coach at Washington. He also earned National Coach of the Year honors that season.

Merrick won the Pac-10 individual title Wednesday by firing a final round, nine-under par 63 to win the crown by 10 shots. He is the fifth UCLA player to win conference medalist honors. Merrick's round set a school record in relation to par.

Conway won two tournaments this season and led the Bruins in scoring average. He tied for eighth at the Pac-10 tournament and was ranked 35th nationally at the start of the week.

Junior Roy Moon was voted to the All-Pac-10 Second Team and redshirt junior Travis Johnson earned Honorable Mention honors.
