Holts Lowers Steeplechase Personal Best in Cardinal Invite

May 2, 2003

STANFORD, Calif. - University of Oregon redshirt sophomore Brett Holts took four more seconds off his steeplechase personal best as the Ducks' only competitor in the Cardinal Invitational at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field Friday evening.

The Bend, Ore., native finished 10th overall of 14 entries in the 3,000-meter event and fifth among collegians (8:48.81). Eastern Michigan's Jordan Desilets won the race in 8:30.59.

'Brett's showing steady improvement and ran a good race tonight,' Oregon men's head coach Martin Smith said. 'He ran solid and consistent against a good field, and this was a good test to set him up for Pac-10s in two weeks.'

Holts owned a previous best of 8:52.41 from his season debut in March - a mark that easily met the Regional and Pac-10 qualifying standards of 9:12.00 and 9:09.14, respectively. In last week's rankings, he stood 22nd in the nation and second in the conference.

Looking ahead, the rest of the Oregon men's and women's track and field teams compete at home Saturday in the Oregon Twilight at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Oregon Twilight field events start at 3:30 pm, and running events follow at 5:15 pm. The featured event and evening finale, the men's Bill McChesney Jr. Memorial Twilight Mile, begins at 8 pm. Saturday's meet also marks the final home appearance of Tom Heinonen who will retire at the end of the 2003 season, his 27th as head coach of the Duck women.
