Manuel Kost Will Play in NCAA Championships
May 2, 2003
EUGENE - University of Oregon sophomore Manuel Kost, currently ranked No. 51 in the country, will play in the singles draw of the men's tennis NCAA Championships beginning May 21 in Athens, Ga. Kost finished the season with a 15-13 record, with most of his matches taking place at the No. 1 position.
'This is the first time in three years for us to have someone in the tournament, so this is big,' Oregon coach Chris Russell said.
Kost will be Oregon's first singles competitor at the NCAA Championships since Guillermo Carter in 2000. Carter earned All-American honors that year by winning two matches before being ousted in the third round.
Kost played in the ITA All-American Championships in the fall, losing in the first round in three close sets to Baylor's Benjamin Becker. This will be Kost's first appearance in the NCAA Championships.
Following the fall season, Kost was forced to sit out the first few matches of the calendar year with an abdominal injury. His first match back, Kost played in the No. 4 position, but worked his way up to the No. 1 position.
Included among Kost's victories this season are wins against then-No. 10 Alex Vlaski of Washington and then-No. 12 David Martin of Stanford, both in straight sets. Martin reached the semifinals in singles last year at the NCAA Championships.
