Stanford Falls To Arizona State, 1-0

May 2, 2003

Stanford, Calif. - One unearned run in the fourth inning by Arizona State was enough to beat the 15th-ranked Stanford softball team in Pac-10 Conference action on Friday evening at Smith Family Stadium. The 16th-ranked Sun Devils improve to 29-19 overall (6-10 Pac-10) with the 1-0 win, while the Cardinal fall to 36-21 and 5-11 in league action.

Arizona State scored the lone run of the game when they put runners on first and second with no outs. Stanford starter Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) got Phelan Wright and Adriana Garcia to foul out, but Kristin Farber scored on Keri Pulcifer's hit that was mishandled by the infield for the 1-0 lead.

Stanford got its best opportunity to tie the game in the fifth. Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, CA) was intentionally walked to move Meghan Sickler (Houston, TX) to second with two outs. Cassi Brangham (Clovis, CA) delivered a single, but Sickler was thrown out at the plate by the Sun Devil shortstop preserving the Arizona State lead.

The Cardinal did put a runner on with two outs in the seventh when Sickler walked, but could not bring her across to tie the game.

Stanford only managed four hits, one each by Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ), Brangham, Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana, CA) and Sickler. Sorensen took the loss for the Cardinal to drop to 17-9 on the year. She scattered five hits and fanned seven ASU batters in the complete game.

Things won't get easier for Stanford as they host top-ranked Arizona tomorrow at 7 p.m. Both teams will also continue with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
