Baseball Falls, 7-6 to Oregon State

May 4, 2003

The Bruins (22-26, 7-8) fell to Oregon State (19-24, 5-13) in the final game of the three-game series in front of 424 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

A six-run second inning from the Beavers put the Bruins behind for the third straight game. Two two-run homers, on from Chris Kunda and another from Seth Pietsch, highlighted the frame for Oregon State.

The Bruins posted their first run in the bottom of the inning when Jeff Abney drove in Chris Jensen with a sacrifice fly.

The Beavers bumped their lead back to six runs as they scored another in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Tony Calderon.

A two-run home run from Brett McMillan, his fifth of the season, brought the Beaver lead down to four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

UCLA would add two more in the sixth when Preston Griffin singled in Chris Jensen and Ryan McCarthy. After six innings, the Bruins trailed 7-5.

Another run in the seventh would bring UCLA within one run. Brandon Averill's pinch-hit single scored Warren Trott, who had singled earlier.

The Bruins magic would not continue as UCLA could not post another run in the final two innings.

UCLA will return to action on Tuesday evening, when its hosts UC Santa Barbara in a 6:00 match-up.
