Duck Men's Golf Receives Bid to NCAA West Regional

May 5, 2003

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon men's golf team will be the 18th seed to the NCAA West Regional, the NCAA announced Monday. The regional will be played May 15-17 at Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, Wash. The top 10 teams from the regional advance to the NCAA Championships May 28-31 in Stillwater, Okla.

'I guess that's right about where I thought we would be,' said coach Steve Nosler. 'I guess you could argue that we should be a little bit higher, but seeding really isn't as important as it is in say basketball. Whether you're No. 1 or No. 18, you still have to beat 17 other teams to advance.'

It will be Oregon's seventh straight NCAA regional appearance. Last year when the regional was at New Mexico, Oregon finished tied for 13th and missed a trip to the NCAA Championships by three strokes.

The Ducks are one of nine teams who will be among the 27-team field for the 2003 NCAA West Regional. UCLA received the No. 1 seed and was followed by Nevada-Las Vegas, Arizona, Georgia, Arizona State, Washington, New Mexico, USC, Pepperdine and San Diego State. The second 10 includes California, Fresno State, UC Irvine, Brigham Young, Colorado State, Texas-El Paso, Denver, Oregon, Austin Peay and Stanford. Oregon State leads the bottom seven teams, followed by Old Dominion, Xavier, Oral Roberts, Navy, Central Connecticut State and Loyola (Md.).

Slated to compete for the Ducks are seniors John Ellis and Chris Carnahan (Albany, Ore.), junior Mike Sica and freshmen Gregg LaVoie and Kyle Johnson (North Bend, Ore.).
