JC Standout Hakeem Rollins Signs with UW Men's Hoop Squad
May 5, 2003
SEATTLE - Hakeem Rollins, an honorable mention junior college All-American from Mesa Community College in Arizona, signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Washington, men's basketball coach Lorenzo Romar announced Monday.
The 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward averaged 24.8 points per game during the 2002-03 season, leading all scorers in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC). Rollins averaged 8.9 rebounds and converted 57 percent of his shots from the field. Mesa finished the season with a 12-18 record.
Rollins capped his sophomore season by receiving first-team All-ACCAC and all-region honors.
He developed into a highly pursued recruit during his two-year stint at Mesa CC, playing under the tutelage of Coach Alton Lister. A 17-year NBA veteran, Lister was a teammate of Romar's on the Milwaukee Bucks in 1984.
Rollins has grown three inches since his senior season at Mesa High School when he averaged 10 points per game.
The Huskies received a commitment from Rollins after he considered several other schools, including Minnesota, Connecticut, Southern Illinois and UC Santa Barbara.
'We're very excited about Hakeem joining our program. He will provide us with much needed inside help, low-post scoring and rebounding,' Romar remarked. 'Hakeem is a young man with great character. He is also a great student who aspires to be a doctor.'
Rollins is the third, and likely last, member of Washington's 2003 basketball recruiting class that will join the team in the fall. He joins Hans Gasser and Tre Simmons.
Gasser is a 6-10 post player who led Issaquah (Wash.) High School to a second-place finish at the state Class 3A championships. Simmons is a 6-5 swingman who prepped at Seattle's Garfield High School before playing one year at Odessa (Texas) Junior College. He played the 2002-03 season at Green River (Wash.) Community College.
