Pac-10 Championships Begin This Weekend At USC With Multi-Events Competition; UCLA Men Also At Oxy Invitational On Saturday

Art Venegas' UCLA men's track & field team on Saturday (May 10) will compete in the Oxy Invitational at Occidental College in Eagle Rock. The hammer begins at 11 a.m., remaining field events at 1 p.m. and the running events at 3 p.m.

This weekend (Saturday-Sunday/May 10-11) at USC will also mark the start of the 2003 Pacific-10 T & F Championships. This Saturday and Sunday USC will host the Pac-10 multi-events (men's decathlon/women's heptathlon) at Loker Stadium. On Saturday, the events begin at 2 p.m. (conclude at 8 p.m.) and on Sunday, it starts at noon (concludes at 7:15 p.m.). For the Bruin men, senior Andrew Phillips (Norwalk/Mayfair) will compete in the decathlon.

The following weekend (May 17-18), USC will host the 2003 Pac-10 Championship meet.

Last Saturday (May 3)/ Bruins Hosted UCLA Invitational at Drake Stadium/Final Home Meet of the 2003 Collegiate Outdoor Season


The Bruin men were led by sophomore Yoo Kim (Rangoon, Burma/Deerfield Academy, MA) and freshman Ryan Hollins (Pasadena/Muir). Kim won the pole vault (18-0.50, a personal-best and the fifth Bruin in history to vault over 18-feet, NRQ). Hollins, the starting center on the Bruin men's basketball team, won the high jump (7-0.25, personal-best, NRQ).

Bruin winners on the track:

-100m - senior John McCauley (Buhl, ID HS), 10.85.

-200m (heat one) - sophomore Robbie Hambleton (San Marino/Loyola), 21.84 (personal-best).

-400m - sophomore Denye Versher (Oakland/St. Mary's), 47.73.

-800m (heat two) - sophomore Martell Mungia (Sacramento/Woodcreek), 1:50.92 (personal outdoor best, NRQ).

-1500m - senior Phil Young (La Canada HS), 3:54.00.

-110m Hurdles - sophomore Anthony Golston (San Diego/Point Loma), 14.24 ( personal-best, NRQ).

Bruin winners in the field:

-HJ - Hollins, 7-0.25 (personal-best, NRQ).

-PV - Kim, 18-0.50 (personal-best, tied for No. 4 in school history, fifth Bruin in history to vault over 18-feet, NRQ).

-HT - redshirt freshman Jeremy Silverman (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona),180-4.

Other top Bruin performances were turned in by:

-senior John Barbieri (Carpinteria HS), placed third in the 400m hurdles, 52.14 (season-best, NRQ).

-senior Kevin Weaver (McKinleyville HS), second place in the high jump (7-0.25, season-best, NRQ). With Hollins and Weaver both jumping over seven-feet, it's the first time since the 1997 season the Bruin men have had two seven-foot high jumpers.

-junior Dan Ames (Lakeside/El Capitan), placed third in the shot put (61-10.50, top placing collegian). The event was won by Bruin great John Godina (67-6.75). Ames was also second in the discus (188-2). Godina also won the discus (200-1).

Bruin great Josh Johnson, son of UCLA legend Rafer Johnson, won the javelin (217-8) and Octavius Gillespie, who was a Bruin senior in 2002, won the long jump (22-3.50).

Looking Ahead

For the Bruins, the remaining major collegiate 2003 outdoor meets will all be held in the State of California - next weekend (May 17-18) USC will host the Pac-10 Championships; Stanford hosts the NCAA Regional Qualifying meet May 30-31 and CS Sacramento hosts the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 11-14.
