Walnut Creek, Calif. - Stanford senior catcher Ryan Garko (Walnut, CA/Servite HS) and freshman lefthanded pitcher Mark Romanczuk (Newark, DE/St. Mark's HS) swept Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of play ending May 4, 2003. Garko was honored for the first time in his career. Romanczuk's selection was the third time he has been in honored, all in the last five weeks. The last time Stanford swept the weekly Pac-10 honors was when Damien Alvarardo (Player of the Week) and Jason Young (Pitcher of the Week) were selected on March 8, 1999.
Garko had a huge series in Stanford's key three-game sweep at USC (May 3-4), going 10-for-13 (.769) with three home runs, 12 RBI and a 1.615 slugging percentage as the Cardinal moved 1.5 games ahead of idle Arizona State in the Pac-10 standings. Garko added two doubles, six runs scored, 21 total bases, two walks, a sacrifice fly and one stolen base in the series. He was 4-for-4 with two homers, his first career grandslam, a career-high seven RBI and a stolen base in the series finale and the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday. He was also 2-for-3 with two RBI in Sunday's opener and finished the doubleheader 6-for-7 with two homers, nine RBI and a stolen base. In Saturday's series opener, Garko was 4-for-6 with a double, homer and three RBI. Both of Garko's four-hit games tied career-highs. In four games for the week, Garko hit .588 (10-17) with three homers, 12 RBI, 21 total bases, a 1.235 slugging percentage, two doubles, six runs scored, two walks, one sacrifice fly and one stolen base. Garko is hitting .393 on the season with 13 homers, a career-high 64 RBI and a .702 slugging percentage.
Romanczuk pitched a three-hit complete game in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at USC to remain unbeaten at 9-0 and become the first Pac-10 pitcher to reach the nine-win mark. The three hits allowed by Romanczuk were the least in any of seven complete games pitched by Stanford starters this season. He also struck out five and held the Trojans scoreless over the final seven innings. Romanczuk's complete game was his second of the season as he lowered his ERA to 3.63. He also has two saves and 54 strikeouts in 67.0 innings, while opponents are hitting just .226 against him.
The Pac-10 Player of the Week honor was the 52nd time a Stanford player has won the award and the second time this season as Danny Putnam also earned the honor on March 4. The Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week award was the 64th time a Stanford player has been selected and the fourth time a Cardinal has won the award in 2003. John Hudgins was also selected on February 11, while Romanczuk's previous selections were on April 1 and 21.
Stanford (31-14, 13-5 Pac-10) currently leads the Pac-10 standings by one and a half games over Arizona State (43-9, 10-5 Pac-10) and two games over Arizona (33-17, 11-7 Pac-10).
