Allister's Three-Run Homer Lifts No. 17 Stanford

May 6, 2003

Stanford, Calif. - Jessica Allister's (Nacogdoches, TX) three-run home run in the fifth inning of the nightcap led the 17th-ranked Stanford softball team to a doubleheader sweep over the visiting San Jose State Spartans on Tuesday night. The Cardinal took the first game 1-0 and the second contest 4-2 to improve to 38-23 overall, while the Spartans fall to 22-35.

Stanford struck first in the opening contest, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in after the first inning of play. Katherine Hoffman (Kansas City, MO) singled, stole second and advanced to third on Cassi Brangham's (Clovis, CA) ground out. Allister delivered a single to right field, plating Hoffman for the Cardinal's first and game-winning run of the night.

Cardinal starter Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) shut down the San Jose State offense, scattering three hits and did not allow a runner past first base. Allister also threw out three Spartan base runners attempting to steal second from behind the plate.

Laura Severson (Frankfort, IL) came in to pitch the final inning for Sorensen. The Spartans tried to rally getting runners at first and second with two outs, but Severson got Heather Lopez to ground into a fielder's choice and end the threat.

Hoffman, Allister and Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana, CA) recorded the Cardinal's only hits of the first game. Sorensen picked up her 18th win of the season to improve to 18-10, finishing with eight strikeouts in six innings of work. Severson also tallied her second save of the year.

Becca Baldridge had two of San Jose State's four hits, while Carol Forbes took the loss for the Spartans falling to 16-15.

In the nightcap, San Jose State scored two runs in the top of the second on Lopez's hit and a RBI by Shannon Anderson that plated Veronica Ramos to take the lead. Stanford's Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) answered with a triple off the right center wall, but was left stranded on third base.

Stanford cut the lead by one in the bottom of the fourth when Ching hit in Brangham from second, who had earlier singled. The Cardinal had base runners on first and second with one out, but could not take advantage.

Bendig and Hoffman recorded back-to-back singles to start the fifth inning for the Cardinal. Following a Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, CA) fly out and a Brangham fielder's choice, Allister connected on a Forbes pitch for a three-run home run scoring Hoffman and Brangham to give Stanford a 4-2 lead. The home run marked Allister's tenth of the season.

San Jose threatened in the top of the seventh when Severson, pitching for starter Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA), walked Ramos. Ramos then advanced to second on a passed ball, but Severson got Courtney Lewis to foul out and fanned both Jessica Guillen and Anderson to end the game.

Nyberg improved her record to 15-9 on her final game at Smith Family Stadium. She went six innings, scattering three hits and struck out three Spartan batters. Severson picked up her second save of the night and third of the year.

Hoffman and Ching each had two hits to led the Cardinal's seven hit attack. Allister finished with three RBI.

Stanford will return to Pac-10 Conference action with games at Oregon this weekend. The Cardinal will battle Oregon State on Friday in a single game and play a doubleheader against the Ducks on Saturday.
