Cal Baseball Wins at Fresno State, 4-2

FRESNO, CA - Led by the hitting of sophomore first baseman James Holder and the solid pitching of Brian Montalbo, Kyle Crist and Joe Todoroff, the California baseball team defeated Fresno State, 4-2, Tuesday night at Beiden Field in Fresno. Cal improved to 27-24, while the Bulldogs fell to 24-25.

Holder was the hitting star for the Bears, going 3-for-3 with a two-run homer in the second inning. Cal score another run in third on a RBI single by junior right fielder Brian Horwitz, and a run in the ninth on a RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Justin Nelson.

Another top hitter for Cal was junior shortstop Jeff Dragicevich, who was 3-for-4, while sophomore second baseman David Nicholson and Nelson added two hits apiece.

On the mound, junior starter Montalbo improved his record to 4-3 (2.0 innings, two hits, one run, one walk, four strikeouts) and sophomore Todoroff earned his first save of the season with an impressive 5.0 innings with three hits, no runs, one walk and three strikeouts.

The losing pitcher for Fresno State was starter Donnie Bair (2-3, 2.0 innings, two hits, three runs, two walks, four strikeouts).

Cal next hosts No. 3 ranked Stanford in a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, May 9 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
