This Week: The Washington baseball team (31-14 overall and 8-7 in the Pac-10 Conference) begins the coming week with its final two non-conference games of the season and then closes it with its final three road contests. Tuesday and Wednesday, Portland visits Husky Ballpark for a pair of non-league games. Tuesday's game is at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday's starts at 4:00 p.m. Friday, the Huskies open a three-game series at UCLA. The opener is slated for 6:00 p.m. while Saturday and Sunday, gametime is 1:00 p.m. All five games this week will air live on KKNW AM-1150, as well as over the internet via gohuskies.com. Following the UCLA series, the UW closes out the regular season with home series vs. Arizona State and USC. Here's a look at this week's games, with probable UW starting pitchers.

Series History: Washington leads the all-time series with Portland, a former member of the Pac-10's Northern Division, 68-39-1. Last year, the Huskies took three of four meetings with the Pilots. The UW lost the first meeting, 11-10, before winning the next three, 10-0, 10-0 and 8-4. Earlier this year in Portland, Washington swept a two-game series. In the first, Josh Conover earned the win in his first career start as the UW prevailed, 13-1. Greg Isaacson belted a homer and two doubles. In the second game, the Dawgs homered four times and Clay Johnson got the win, 10-3. Brent Lillibridge, Ben Johnson and John Otness each hit their first homer of the year while Chad Boudon hit his seventh. UCLA leads the all-time series vs. the UW, 21-7, though Washington won two of three last year at Husky Ballpark. The UW lost the opener, 8-1, before winning the next two, 5-4 and 9-5.

Coach 'K': In 10-plus seasons as the head coach of his alma mater, Ken Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two second-place finishes and four NCAA Regionals. His career overall record stands at 378-249-1 (.603). With those 378 wins, he is the second-winningest coach in UW history, trailing only Bob MacDonald (422). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 183-81-1 (.692) record in home games. He is 160-113 (.586) in conference games. Knutson has coached 37 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in 10 seasons, and has been named league coach of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistants Joe Ross, Travis Jewett, and Gregg Swenson and undergrad assistant Jeremiah Porter.

Last Weekend: After a 15-3 win last Tuesday vs. Lewis-Clark State, the Huskies traveled across the state for a three-game, Pac-10 series at Washington State, coming home with a pair of wins. Friday night, the UW built a 6-0 lead, but took until the 13th inning to secure a 9-8 win on a solo homer from Mike Wagner. Wagner, Tila Reynolds and Brent Lillibridge each had three hits and Trent Baysinger worked the 12th and 13th innings for the win. Saturday, the UW broke open a tight game in the seventh when Chad Boudon's 18th homer highlighted a four-run inning. Jeff Petersen threw six innings for the 9-4 win. Sunday, the Husky bats fell quiet in a 6-2 loss. Lillibridge belted two doubles and Clay Johnson worked five innings in a loss.

Outstanding In The Field: Washington is its best year ever in terms of its defense. Through 45 games, the Huskies are fielding a Pac-10-leading .980 (third in NCAA Division I) and have made only 34 errors. Washington's school record for fielding percentage is .964, set in 1980 and tied in 1994. This year, the Huskies have played error-free in 28 of 42 games so far while opponents have made at least one error in all but 10 games. Washington infielders have committed only 19 errors all season. By way of comparison, South Carolina led the NCAA with a .975 fielding percentage last season. Also, opponents have been very wary when it comes to trying to steal bases vs. the UW. Over the last 34 games, opponents have stolen only 14 bases while being caught 18 times.
