Bruins to Begin Play at NCAA West Regional Thursday

The 11th ranked UCLA women's golf team travels to Phoenix, AZ for the NCAA West Regionals, May 8-10. Arizona State will serve as the tournament host.

The Karsten Golf Course will play to a par of 72 over 6,256 yards. Tournament format will be 54 holes of stroke play over three days. The top eight teams and two individuals will qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held at Purdue University, May 20-23.

The 21-team field features several of the nation's top ranked teams, including No.2 Pepperdine, No.5 USC, No.8 Oklahoma State as well as the 11th ranked Bruins.

Also competing are some of the nation's top ranked players, including No.1 Katherine Hull of Pepperdine, No.3 Mikaela Parmlid of USC and UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas, ranked 10th.

'We are definitely looking forward to going back to ASU,' said Head Coach Carrie Leary. 'We have three players who have won there before, including Charlotte.'

For the Bruins, Mayorkas will play in the No.1 position. She won the ASU Invitational at Karsten on Apr. 6 with scores of 66-71-72-207, seven under par. Her first round 66 and her 54-hole total set school records. She leads the Bruins with a scoring average of 73.8 and boasts six straight Top 20 finishes. She earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors on Apr. 28.

Freshman Susie Mathews earned Second-Team All-Pac-10 honors and ranks second on the team in scoring average. She boasts one Top 10 finish among her two Top 20 finishes. Mathews ranks 86th in the latest GolfStat poll.

Juniors Hana Kim and Gina Umeck each earned all-conference honorable mention honors. Umeck ranks third on the team in scoring average at 75.7, has five Top 20 finishes and ranks 109th nationally. Kim has an average of 76.2, ranks 110th nationally and has four Top 20 finishes. As high school players, Kim and Umeck won the Ping/Phoenix AJGA event at the Karsten Golf Course in successive seasons.

Junior Melissa Martin tied for 16th at the Pac-10 Championship and ranks 166th in the country. She will be competing in her third straight NCAA West Regional competition.Last year UCLA and Pepperdine tied for the West Regional title at Stanford, and the Bruins prevailed in a card playoff.

'We have practiced hard and we're ready for this year's event,' said Leary.
