Bruins Fall to Arizona, 7-5 in Tucson
May 9, 2003
TUCSON, AZ - A walk-off home run by Jackie Coburn on Friday night at Arizona's Hillenbrand Stadium sealed the Pac-10 Championship for the Wildcats, as Arizona defeated UCLA by a 7-5 margin. Claire Sua and Emily Zaplatosch both homered for the Bruins in the game.
Claire Sua opened the second inning with a monstrous home run, clearing the bleachers in left field for her 15th home run of the season, giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Bruins started a rally with a lead-off walk by second baseman Monique Mejia. Mejia would advance on a slap hit up the middle by Natasha Watley. Watley would be out at second base on a fielders choice hit by Caitlin Benyi, leaving the Bruins with runners on the corners. Tairia Mims then stepped to the plate, putting an RBI single through the center of the infield to score Mejia. The ball was bobbled in center field, allowing Benyi to score and advancing Mims to second base, making the score 3-0 in UCLA's favor.
The Wildcats got on the board posting four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Arizona batted around in the frame. The rally started as Lovie Jung doubled to lead off the inning, followed by a walk to Mackenzie Vandergeest, which put runners on the corners as Jung advanced to third on a wild pitch. When Wendy Allen hit a hard ground ball to Tairia Mims, Mims tried to catch Jung at third base, but was unable to make the play at third base, and Claire Sua was unable to scoop Mims' throw at first base, leaving the bases loaded. After Jackie Coburn struck out for the first out of the inning, Michelle Schultz singled to right field, bringing home the first run of the game for Arizona. Pinch-hitter xxx Palomarez drew an RBI walk before a two-RBI single by lead-off hitter Autumn Champion scored Schultz and Lisha Ribellia to give Arizona the 4-3 lead after four innings.
Alicia Hollowell recorded four strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth inning, but unfortunately for Arizona the lead-off strikeout to Tairia Mims turned into a K-wild pitch, with Mims safe at first base. Pinch-runner Amanda Simpson came in for Mims, and would come around to score on a two-out home run by Emily Zaplatosch, her ninth of the season, tying the game at 5-5 after five an a half innings.
Jackie Coburn ended the game for the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run home run over the scoreboard for the 7-5 victory.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday night with a doubleheader at Arizona State. The games are scheduled to begin at 7 pm, and are the final two games in UCLA's regular season.
