Inman, Garner Earn Top-10 Finishes at Cardinal Qualifier
May 9, 2003
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Senior Courtney Inman and junior Eric Garner each earned top-10 finishes Friday at the Cardinal Qualifier in Palo Alto, Calif., closing out the regular season for both. Washington junior Jeremy Park, scheduled to compete in the 1,500-meter run, did not appear in the results.
Washington's school-record holder indoors at 800 meters, Inman battled both collegiate and professional runners in the hotly-contested women's 800-meter race at Stanford. Five runners neared the finish in a tight pack, with Florida State's Laura Gerber pulling away for the win in 2 minutes, 3.08 seconds. The remaining four runners in the lead pack all finished within one second of another, with Inman crossing the line fifth in 2:06.90.
The only other Husky to compete at Stanford on Friday was Garner. One of just two Husky runners ever to run the mile in under four minutes, the junior wrapped up his 2003 regular season with an eighth-place effort in the 1,500 meters, finishing in 3:45.83.
Both UW runners boast previous season-bests in their respective events which qualify them for Pac-10 and NCAA competition, beginning with the conference championships next weekend at USC. Inman is also a postseason qualifier in the 1,500 meters, while Garner owns qualifying marks at 800-, 1,500- and 5,000 meters.
The full Husky squad will close out its home schedule Saturday with the Ken Foreman Invitational at Husky Stadium. The meet will be the final home appearance for Washington's outstanding senior class, including school-record holders Brad Walker, Kameko Gay and Heather Reichmann.
