Jon Wheeler Resigns as Assistant Coach

May 9, 2003

BERKELEY - Jon Wheeler, who served as an assistant men's basketball coach at Cal the past three seasons, has resigned for personal reasons, head coach Ben Braun announced Friday.

'I love Cal and what it represents,' Wheeler said. 'But right now, I want to take some time to reconnect with some other things in my life, especially my family. I have enjoyed the last three years with coach Braun, the basketball program and the relationships I have shared. My connection with Cal will never end. I feel great about that.'

A 6-7 forward for the Golden Bears during the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons, Wheeler was a part-time assistant coach at Cal from 1990-92 before joining Braun's staff in 2000.

'I appreciate the contributions that Jon has made over the past three years,' Braun said. 'I certainly respect and support his decision.'

In addition to his stints at Cal, Wheeler was an assistant coach at UC Davis from 1992-95 and at Pepperdine in 1996. He later served as an assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara from 1997-2000 prior to returning to Berkeley.

Wheeler received his bachelor's degree from Cal in social sciences in 1987, and he earned a master's degree in athletic administration from Saint Mary's in 1998. He and his wife, Jynane, have a three-year-old son, Michael.
