Bruins and Trojans Fight to a Draw in Match Play Event
May 12, 2003
The UCLA and USC men's golf teams played to a 3-3 tie in a match play event, hosted by USC Monday at Riviera Country Club.
The two teams split the first four matches, and the last two matches were halved on the 18th hole, which was Riveria's ninth hole for Monday's rounds.
The matches will not be counted in the Lexus Gauntlet standings for the 2002-03 athletic season.
'This is an event that both programs hope to continue for many years,' said UCLA Coach O.D. Vincent. 'It was a competitive match, and it came down to the last shot.'
On the final hole, UCLA junior John Merrick, who recently won the Pac-10 individual title, slid an eight-foot birdie putt past the hole that could have clinched the match for the Bruins. Merrick's opponent, Taylor Wood sank a birdie putt just moments before to apply the pressure on Merrick, who was 1-up at that point.
In the other match of the final group, USC's David Oh three-putted for a bogey and his opponent, UCLA's Steve Conway, made a two-putt par to square their match.
