CAL EARNS NO. 2 SEED IN REGION 7 California opens defense of its first national championship at Ann Arbor, Mich. The No. 2 seed Golden Bears will face seventh-seeded Oakland (Mich.) to begin regional play. Should Cal win, it faces the victor between No. 3 Michigan vs. No. 6 Western Michigan.

CAL IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT California is making its 19th appearance in the NCAA Softball Tournament. The Golden Bears have advanced to the postseason in 18 consecutive years, the longest active streak of any school in the Pacific-10 Conference. Cal's appearance in Michigan marks just the fifth time in the last 18 years that the Bears have played at a regional site outside the state of California. Cal's only previous out-of-state regional sites were Florida State ('01), Massachusetts ('99) and Arizona State ('82, 86). Since 1982, Cal has participated in regional play in Fresno, Calif., 10 times, while playing three years at home and one at Sacramento State.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY Pac-10 teams have always been well represented in the NCAA Tournament and the Bears have done their part to become one of the nation's elite. With its title last year, Cal became just the seventh team to earn the national crown. Cal is fifth among all teams with 46 NCAA Tournament wins (just one behind fourth-ranked Cal State Fullerton's 47) and tied for seventh with 11 College World Series victories. In addition, the program ranks fourth with seven World Series' appearances.
