Three Wildcat Golfers Advance at U.S. Women's Open Local Qualifier

MESA, Ariz.-Arizona golfers Erica Blasberg, Laura Myerscough and Julia Kraschinski were among 18 women to advance Monday at the USGA Women's Open Local Qualifier, held at Alta Mesa Country Club. The trio of golfers next competes in the USGA Women's Open Sectional Qualifier with the goal of earning a spot in the 2003 U.S. Women's Open.
Blasberg and Myerscough each posted rounds of 3-over-par 75 to tie for ninth place in the event. Kraschinski shot 5-over-par 77 and tied for 17th place. The threesome will now compete at one of eight USGA Sectional Qualifiers in mid-June.
Other golfers in the field included former Wildcats Cristina Baena, Christina Monteiro and Cathie Williamson. Williamson carded a 6-over-par 78, but failed to qualify after losing a playoff to determine the final qualifier. Baena shot 9-over-par 81, while Monteiro posted a round of 10-over-par 82.
This past weekend saw Blasberg and Myerscough lead the Wildcats to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA East Regional. Blasberg, a freshman from Corona, Calif., finished the event in a tie for eighth place. Myerscough, a senior from Charleston, Ill., tied for 26th place at the regional tournament.
In other UA women's golf news, freshman Rachel Gavin claimed the title at the 74th annual Arizona Women's Golf Association State Amateur Match Play Championship. A native of Tucson, Gavin qualified for the championship match in which she defeated Wallaoe Hamerton of Prescott, Ariz. Gavin used a redshirt season during the 2002-03 college golf season and has not yet competed as a collegian for Arizona.
Arizona's women's golf team is next in action at the NCAA Championships, beginning May 20. The NCAA Championship tournament is being held at Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
