Cougars Drop 9-8 Game to LCSC In 11 Innings
May 13, 2003
LEWISTON, Idaho -- - Paul Gallegos' eleventh inning single scored Neil Litchfield with the winning run as the Lewis-Clark State Warriors defeated visiting Washington State 9-8 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday evening at Harris Field.
WSU (17-33) relief pitcher Nick Kenyon (1-4) took the loss for the Cougars, while LCSC (43-12) reliever Mark Kaiser (9-2) threw the final five innings and gained the win. WSU used three pitchers, starter James Freeman and then Brett Beetham. LCSC, meanwhile, sent five pitchers to the mound, starting with Tim Petke. He was followed by Nic Puckett, Ben Newton, Kevin Welch and Kaiser, who struck out six and walked two.
Each team collected 13 hits in a contest that looked like a high scoring game for five innings. The hosts jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first, then had to battle back from 2-1 and 7-6 Cougar leads after the first five innings. Trailing 8-7 going into the eighth, WSU scored once to tie the score and force extra innings.
Wes Falkenborg led WSU at the plate with three hits, including his fourth home run of the year, a three-run shot to right center field. Farrar, Grant Richardson, Derek Bruce each had two hits for WSU. Gallegos had three hits for the Warriors, while four other LCSC players had two hits each.
In the deciding eleventh inning, Kaiser set WSU down in order, with all three outs recorded on called third strikes. In the bottom of the inning Litchfield led off with a single to right field, then moved to second on Tyler Best's sacrifice bunt. Micah Furtado then drew an intentional walk, the third of the night by WSU pitchers. Gallegos followed with a deep drive to left center that just eluded the glove of a diving Jeremy Farrar, allowing the winning run to score.
After the Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, WSU came back to tie the game in the second, but missed a golden opportunity to take the lead. Consecutive hits by Richardson, Bruce and Falkenborg loaded the bases and Fender's sacrifice fly sent Richardson home and Bruce to third. Jacobsen then grounded into a double play to halt the Cougar threat.
LCSC added a pair of runs in their half of the third to go on top 3-2 and after Robert Stahlke's run-scoring pinch hit single earned WSU a 3-3 tie in the fourth, the Warriors scored three more times for a 6-3 lead.
The Cougars, however, came right back with four runs in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. Farrar led off the inning with his sixth home run of the year and later in the inning Falkenborg went deep to give WSU a one-run lead. The Warriors then scored twice in their half of the inning on Wayne Stone's two-run single that boosted LCSC back into the lead 8-7.
WSU returns to action Friday in Los Angeles, where the Cougars and USC Trojans meet for three Pacific-10 Conference games.
