Diamond Dawgs Set For Big Series Against ASU
May 13, 2003
This Week: The Washington baseball team (35-15 overall and 10-8 in the Pac-10 Conference) enters the final two weeks of the regular season with two important home series. This Saturday through Monday (May 17-19), Arizona State visits Husky Ballpark for a three-game, Pac-10 series. Saturday and Sunday, game time is 1:00 p.m. and on Monday, first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. The Huskies enter the week in sole possession of fourth place in the Pac-10 and probably need to win at least three of their final six games to earn a berth in the 64-team NCAA tournament. While the games won't air on radio in the Seattle area, the ASU broadcast will be available via a link from www.gohuskies.com. After the ASU series, Washington plays host to USC May 23-25 in the final weekend of the season. Here's a look at this weekend's games, with the Huskies' probable starting pitchers:
Sat., May 17: Arizona State at UW, 1:00 p.m. -- RHP Sean White (6-4, 5.38)Sun., May 18: Arizona State at UW, 1:00 p.m. -- RHP Jeff Petersen (5-4, 4.67)Mon., May 19: Arizona State at UW, 6:30 p.m. -- RHP Clay Johnson (5-3, 5.17)
Series History: Washington is only 4-11 all-time against Arizona State, as the two teams only began playing one another in 1998, the last season of two-division play in the Pac-10. Three of Washington's four wins against ASU have come at Husky Ballpark as the UW is 3-6 at home and 1-5 on the road vs. the Sun Devils. Last season, the Huskies won one of three games in a series played at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Ariz. The UW won the opener, 14-11, largely thanks to an eight-run seventh inning. The Huskies had trailed 8-1 at one point in the game. Tila Reynolds was 3-for-5 in the game and Jay Garthwaite was 2-for-6 with five RBI and a homer. Sean White worked six innings for the win, despite allowing eight runs (seven earned). The UW led, 3-0, in game two, but lost 8-3, thanks to a four-run fourth from the Devils. David Dowling, making his second career start, suffered the loss. In game three, ASU out-slugged UW for a 13-6 win, pounding out 19 hits on the day. Andre Ethier and Jeff Larish each had three hits and three RBI for ASU.
Coach 'K': In nearly 11 seasons as the head coach of his alma mater, Ken Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two second-place finishes and four NCAA Regionals. His career overall record stands at 382-250-1 (.604). With those 382 wins, he is the second-winningest coach in UW history, trailing only Bob MacDonald (422). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 185-81-1 (.695) record in home games. He is 162-114 (.587) in conference games. Knutson has coached 37 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in 10 seasons, and has been named league coach of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistants Joe Ross, Travis Jewett, and Gregg Swenson and undergrad assistant Jeremiah Porter.

Outstanding In The Field: Washington is its best year ever in terms of its defense. Through 50 games, the Huskies are fielding a Pac-10-leading .981 (third in NCAA Division I) and have made only 36 errors. Washington's school record for fielding percentage is .964, set in 1980 and tied in 1994. This year, the Huskies have played error-free in 31 of 50games so far while opponents have made at least one error in all but 11 games. Washington infielders have committed only 19 errors all season. By way of comparison, South Carolina led the NCAA with a .975 fielding percentage last season. Also, opponents have been very wary when it comes to trying to steal bases vs. the UW. Over the last 40 games, opponents have stolen only 24 bases while being caught 19 times.
