Bruins Defeat Fresno State, 3-0 at NCAA Regional 2
May 16, 2003
FRESNO, CA - UCLA put together three one-run innings and Keira Goerl pitched a two-hit shutout on Friday afternoon at Bulldog Diamond as UCLA defeated the fourth-seeded host Fresno State 3-0 at NCAA Regional 2. The Bruins are now 47-6 on the season and advance to face either Georgia or Michigan State in the winners bracket semifinal at 2:30 pm on Saturday.
The Bruins opened the scoring in the second inning, as a two-out double down the left field line by Stephanie Ramos turned into an RBI when Toria Auelua put a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Ramos from second base to give UCLA the 1-0 lead.
Natasha Watley started UCLA's next rally in the third inning, putting a one-out triple over the head of Bulldog left fielder Nicole Shan. Watley would then come home on an RBI single to left by Tairia Mims for the 2-0 UCLA lead after two and a half innings.
UCLA loaded the bases in the sixth inning, and was able to push one run across, as pinch-runner Amanda Simpson scored on an RBI single by Monique Mejia. The rally started with a lead-off single to left by Claire Sua, who was replaced by Simspon to run. After Simpson stole second base, Emily Zaplatosch drew a walk, and was replaced by pinch runner Julie Hoshizaki. Simpson would score from second on a single through the right side by Monique Mejia, with Hoshizaki being held at third and Mejia taking second base on the unsuccessful throw to the plate. Andrea Duran drew a walk to load the bases, but Bulldog left fielder Shan made a nice catch on a hard hit by Natasha Watley to end the inning with UCLA leading 3-0.
In the circle, Keira Goerl pitched three perfect and five no-hit innings before allowing a one-hit single to Shan in the bottom of the sixth inning. The second hit of the game for the Bulldogs came in the seventh inning on a chopper up the middle by Lori Hoffman, when Monique Mejia and Natasha Watley crossed just in front of the second base bag but neither was able to make the play.
Goerl faced just two batters over the minimum in the game, striking out five, walking one and allowing two hits to earn her 33rd victory of the season. That win ties the UCLA single-season record shared by Courtney Dale (1999) and Lisa Fernandez (1993).
The Bruins will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 against either third-seeded Michigan State or second-seeded Georgia in the winners bracket semifinal. The winner of that game will earn a spot in Sunday's Regional Championship game.
